Economic Overview

Construction of new homes at Mountain Gate in Palm Springs.
The Desert Sun

The Coachella Valley's robust economy is evident from the ongoing growth, especially with new construction. In 2004, 9,300 new housing permits were issued, over 60 percent located in eastern Coachella Valley. With the Coachella Valley growing by 53 daily, homebuilding and related retail services will continue to flourish. Construction accounts for the third largest number of average employees in 2004 with about 15,000. Accommodation and food services employ the most workers at an average of about 21,000. Healthcare industries are growing to accommodate the population growth of the Coachella Valley.

Other indicators of a growing economy to support the spurt in business development are the record-breaking increase in the number of passengers at the Palm Springs International Airport, hotel occupancy rate increases year-over-year and the increase in the number of new and existing home sales.
